How Concentrate is Made

Whey concentrate is the less processed of the two. After the liquid whey is separated from the cheese curd, it goes through ultrafiltration to remove water and some of the lactose and fat. The result is a powder that typically contains 70 to 80% protein by weight, with the remaining percentage being lactose, fat, and small amounts of minerals.

How Isolate is Made

Hydrolysate is isolate that has been further processed using enzymes to break the protein chains into shorter peptides. The research on whether faster absorption translates into meaningfully better muscle-building outcomes is mixed, and hydrolysate costs significantly more. For most recreational exercisers, it is not necessary.

Whey concentrate is a good protein source that works well for the majority of people. Whey isolate is cleaner, lower in lactose, and easier to track, but those benefits are most relevant for people with lactose sensitivity or those following strict dietary protocols.

If your stomach handles concentrate without complaint and price matters to you, concentrate is a reasonable choice. If you are lactose-sensitive or want the leanest possible macros, isolate earns its price premium.
